MATT Board Member Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of San Antonio Appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Los Angeles

“Archbishop Gomez has been an invaluable asset to our organization, offering wisdom, vision and leadership. We are honored that he will continue to serve and be actively involved on our board as MATT continues to develop and grow,” stated MATT Chairman of the Board Alonso Ancira.

MATT, a bi-national, non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life of both Mexicans and Americans living in Mexico and the United States, has as one of its top priorities the integration of immigrants into American society. As a result, MATT launched an English immersion program dedicated to teach functional English to Spanish-speaking individuals utilizing practical case scenarios such as renting an apartment, opening a bank account, and applying for a job. The lessons are transmitted on the Guadalupe Radio Network and the workbooks are distributed free through parishes and schools. Archbishop Gomez was instrumental in spearheading the MATT Maestro en Casa pilot program, currently implemented in Texas.“Archbishop Gomez had the vision of helping those who lack the communication skills crucial for a healthy and prosperous integration. Without his guidance, Maestro en Casa would not have been as successful as it is today. With Archbishop Gomez involvement, we were able to launch MATT MEC successfully in Texas and are able to expand its presence effectively in other communities, including Los Angeles,” confirms Aracely Garcia-Granados, executive director of MATT.

The MATT family is proud to have had the opportunity to know Archbishop Gomez well and his dedication to the community. MATT is confidant that Archbishop Gomez will be an invaluable asset to all Catholics, primarily those in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. As a native of Monterrey, Mexico, Archbishop Gomez possesses a keen understanding of the hardship, struggles, and needs of migrant communities.“Pope Benedict XVI could not have made a more appropriate appointment at the most timely of moments in our history,” commented Ancira. “He has been a tremendous force in our community and we are confident that this is just the beginning of a most enlightening future for Archbishop Gomez.”

Dr. Richard Waunerdi, Texas Medical Center President and Rick Flanagan, Chief of the Houston Fire Department will serve as Honorary Chairmen for the First Amos House of Faith Golf Classic.

Honorary Chairmen Named for First Amos House of Faith Golf Classic

The tournament, a shotgun start, 4-person scramble, will be held Monday, July 19, 2010 at Southwyck Golf Club in Pearland, Texas. Come and play with a purpose… support the burn community (adults, children, caregivers and firefighters) in Houston, Texas and surrounding areas.

Daryl Gardener (Baylor University and 1996 first round pick of the Miami Dolphins) is a special partner of The Amos House of Faith and has invited other members of the NFL Players Association to join him in supporting this cause while enjoying a day of golf, networking, great food, fun and prizes.

The Amos House of Faith, a non-profit organization, provides support for survivors of burn trauma. The organization needs community involvement to make 2010 the year of a groundbreaking ceremony for a House of Hope for burn survivors and their families. Founder and Executive Director, Justina Page knows just how arduous the road to recovery can be.

On March 7, 1999 the Page family (Justina, her husband and six sons) experienced the horror of a house fire. The fire claimed the life of the Page’s 22-month old twin son, Amos, and severely injured Justina and the other twin. She knows firsthand the depth of support necessary to heal the physical and emotional trauma and transform a burn patient from a victim to a survivor. 0800 Repair’s Appliance Repairs Engineer Paul Short recently donated the money drummed up by holding a raffle for a brand new washing machine, with the takings being donated to Cancer Research at the Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Paul had this to say about the donation, “It was great to raise this money for the hospital. The three years my wife was treated there were an extremely difficult time for us both, but the staff at the Sunderland Royal made it that much more bearable”

“You really feel like one of the family when you went into the ward” Paul’s wife Sharon had been successfully treated for Leukaemia at the Sunderland Royal’s cancer unit and ever since Paul has tried to help raise money for the progression of cancer research at the Royal Hospital.

The washing machine was donated to Paul’s Sunderland franchise of the North East company 0800 Repair which specialises in household repairs of some key household appliances such as washing machine repairs across all household brands such as Bosch Repairs. Renowned Freerunner and Ninja Warrior does Backflips for Charity

Freerunner Levi Meeuwenberg is using his amazing abilities to give something back. Levi is known for his numerous appearances on the Japanese game show Ninja Warrior on G4 where he made it further than any other American competitor. His backflip fundraiser will raise money to teach disadvantaged children in Washington how to overcome obstacles through Parkour. As pledges are made, Levi will do a backflip for each donation.

When a donation is made on Levi’s website SkyNative.com, a message is immediately sent to Levi’s phone telling him to do a backflip. No matter where he is or what he’s doing at that moment he will do a standing backflip. He will then tweet explaining who made him do the backflip, where they made him do it, and what happened.

Thousands of young people in Washington are homeless or from very low-income families who consistently fall through the cracks of society without support from a positive community. Many are missing out on their potential in life by not having anything to develop a passion for or to build goals from. This Parkour Visions project will affect more than 500 at-risk youth from the lowest-income housing in King County, crisis centers in Seattle, and public schools in Tacoma’s poorest neighborhoods.

Through parkour, these at-risk youth in Washington will improve their self-esteem and fitness by learning to run, jump, climb, crawl, and vault over obstacles, transforming their everyday world into an epic playscape. The Parkour Visions classes use parkour basics to teach young people how to creatively use the environment around them to improve and challenge themselves. Lessons encourage pride in achievement, respect for training grounds, and responsibility in facing fears.

If you have the creative ability to turn a simple set of railings into a playground, a gym, and a public stage then you have the potential for lifelong physical and mental fitness. This is what parkour can build when taught correctly.
