The Rose receives 2016 Jack Kemp Excellence in Affordable and Workforce Housing Award from the Urban Land Institute

Minneapolis, Minnesota, 2016-Nov-04 — /EPR NON PROFIT NEWS/ — PLACE is pleased to announce that The Rose and three sister developments at Portland and Franklin Avenues (South Quarter) in Minneapolis were selected by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Terwilliger Center for Housing as the winner of the 2016 Jack Kemp Excellence in Affordable and Workforce Housing Award. This annual award honors developments that ensure housing affordability for people with a range of incomes. Representing the completion of South Quarter, The Rose offers 43 market rate apartments and 47 income-restricted affordable apartments in profoundly sustainable buildings that have neither furnaces nor conventional air conditioning equipment.

In 2010, affordable housing developer Aeon, in partnership with Hope Community, selected PLACE by competition to add specialized development consultant capacity as Sustainability Champion for the last phase of South Quarter. Aeon wanted the final buildings to be the best performing buildings of their kind in the country, on an affordable housing budget. A 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to public benefit, PLACE provided disruptive environmental design analysis, assisted in assembling and facilitating a world-class collaborative design and construction team, deepened community engagement, and refined financial modeling in furtherance of creating high-performance, healthy buildings for Aeon’s residents.

Minneapolis has the harshest climate of any large city in America. The biggest challenge for PLACE was to ensure that the team could deliver a building envelope capable of keeping residents cool in a scorching summer with high humidity and a frigid winter with temperatures plunging to minus thirty degrees Fahrenheit. Buildings in the U.S. are built each day to standards that cause them to consume 70% of America’s primary energy, with 52% of that energy going to heating and cooling. The Rose is 75% more energy efficient than local standards require, which also deepens affordability for residents; it represents PLACE’s most cutting edge restorative development work to date.

“This project is on the leading edge of workforce housing development and preservation,” said J. Ronald Terwilliger, chairman of Terwilliger Pappas Multifamily Partners in Atlanta. “It has it all—mixed-income housing, environmental sustainability, long-term affordability, and long-term financing.”

UNVELING GAALI FREE INDIA INITIATIVE

But are we really being true to ourselves. Do we really care about the essence of Republic Day Celebrations? To so many people who revel at the thought of getting an extended weekend to hang out with family or just head for a long drive away from the city on Republic Day- Is this patriotism in the true sense? How many of us actually switch on the TV and revel viewing the Republic Day Parade or watch the live parade? At the most, we sport the tri-coloured flag as a badge or as a desk décor. Are we really doing something constructive for the betterment of the country on Republic Day? The answer is with most of us and it is mostly in the negative.

With this thought lingering in her mind, Vandana Sethhi, the Director of Water Communications woke up to do something constructive as a responsible citizen of India and do her bit towards adding value to the India’s growth story. She decided that on the occasion of Republic Day, to add another wing to our respected Prime Minister Modi’s Swachch Bharat campaign by initiating the Swachch Bhasha drive as part of her social initiative. Under this campaign, she wanted to reach out to the people of India and remind them about their responsibility towards their own language, the need for cleaning of one’s vocabulary filled with gaalis and cusp words and working towards using Swachch Bhasha in day to day life while they take care of keeping their surroundings clean as well.

She opines that gaalis have become a disease and is spreading like an epidemic amongst people of Gen-Next era who are so busy running after success that they just don’t know how to control their feelings. To them gaalis is the easiest way to vent out their anger, frustrations and to cope up with stress. She emphatically says “We are humans and we are bound to get frustrated at different times of our lives. But do we really need to depend on gaalis to feel in control just like a little piece of chocolate uplifts one’s mood temporarily by stimulating the endorphin? With over 1,282,390,303 people, India is the second largest nation in terms of population. It is equivalent to 17.5% of the total world population. An estimated 780 languages are spoken in the country. With an expected literacy rate to touch 80% by end of this year, India is a progressive nation beyond doubt … But are we really literate in the moral sense?”

People across the length and breadth of the nation use gaalis as if it is in vogue and that those who don’t use it are considered to be ‘unmanly’ or less gutsy. Gaalis are used so frequently irrespective of any language being spoken, that it has soon become one’s habit that has engulfed them completely and made them unawares of their true vocabulary. Gaalis have become our newly defined vocabulary which they are addicted to using it in their day to day conversations and are passing it down to their next generation without even realizing about its repercussions.

Vandana further opines strongly that people’s identity is not through their status quo or high birth, but through the language they use in their day to day life. Those who respect humanity never use ‘gaalis’ and those who use gaalis in any language are never fully literate in the real sense. Language that’s replete with curse/abusive words, demeaning meanings, demoralizing words and disrespectful diction is a drain on the nation’s rich cultural heritage. It is a blot on the nation’s deep rooted values.

Vandana is that voice that wants to be heard not just to make her presence felt but to enable each and every Indian re-look at their diction and see for themselves that they have become slaves to the gaalis they use- and they don’t even realize it. Vandana is very serious about raising her voice in support of a Gaali Free India- not just for the betterment of the youth but for posterity’s sake as well.

The Metropolitan Council approves a $2M grant to fund a landmark, transit-oriented development in the heart of St. Louis Park, Minnesota

St. Louis Park, MN, December 11, 2015 — /EPR NON PROFIT NEWS/ — On December 9, 2015 and after overwhelming enthusiasm and support from a rigorous application and vetting process, the Metropolitan Council approved funding for PLACE’s St. Louis Park Community. The Council approved 2 million dollars in funding from its Livable Communities Account for a Transit-Oriented Development (LCA-TOD) grant after the proposed project demonstrated a breakthrough approach to meeting housing and economic development needs in the Twin Cities. The funds will be used to help secure site acquisition at the former McGarvey Coffee property, pioneer alternative energy sources, and integrate stormwater improvement with infrastructure like green roofs and an urban forest.

A nonprofit called PLACE (Projects Linking Art, Community, and Environment) heads up the community endeavor in concert with the City of St. Louis Park, fellow eco-minded and socially conscious companies like Allianz Life, Stantec, Shaw-Lundquist, Lindquist & Vennum, MSR, LIFT, and Rachel Contracting that have invested in the project, other private partners, and public collaborators like Hennepin County. The community will elevate affordable living, design, and artistic culture in the city and will be located near the expected Green Line extension (Southwest Light Rail) Wooddale Station. The development’s potential positive impact is staggering, with healthy homes for 300 households across the income spectrum supported by a mobility hub, urban agriculture, live and work spaces, a hotel, and a renewable energy generation system that consumes food waste created by its inhabitants and surrounding neighbors.

Chris Velasco, PLACE’s Executive Director, observed, “I think this project will be of national significance for communities that want to effectively leverage their scarce resources.”

Ryan Kelley, City of St. Louis Park Planner, says, “The City of St. Louis Park is extremely proud to be the co-recipient with PLACE of the Met Council’s largest transit oriented development grant for a new sustainable community of regional significance.”

Hays PureWater Launches $10,000 Campaign To Save Lives

WASHINGTON, IA, November 25, 2014 — /EPR NON PROFIT NEWS/ — 783 million people live each day without clean water and 3.4 million die annually from a lack of pure water. To combat these staggering statistics, Washington-based nonprofit, Hays PureWater, launched a crowd-funding campaign. The money raised will fund 30 Khlor Glen technology units to purify water for 150,000 individuals. The organization hopes to raise $10,000 by December 1st.

Hosted on crowd-funding platform IndieGoGo, the project offers nine sponsorship levels. Each level includes novelty “rewards” for donors, ranging from stickers to t-shirts to a trip to Haiti. The rewards are unique, innovative and hands on, giving donors a sense of ownership in the project. For just $2,500, an investor can travel to Haiti (all inclusive) to see the life changing benefits first hand.

The Khlor Glen is a simple unit that turns salt water into chlorine. The chlorine treats infected water, removing deadly impurities and toxins in just one hour. It’s solar powered and easily used in remote areas, where clean water is most needed. “It will also impact malaria zones as it can be used as a bug repellant and protect from disease,” says founder John Hays. “Even just using the chlorine produced by the unit as a sanitizer can cut down on so many infections that the natives in these areas don’t even know exist.”

In the last eight years, Hays PureWater distributed over 4,000 purifying units around the world, changing entire communities by implementing this system. It’s proven to work. Hays builds each system with the help of a dedicated group of volunteers. Nothing is outsourced, ensuring the most effective product for the lowest cost. •  61% have no access to clean water

•  96% have no access to sanitation

•  85% of women cannot read or write

“It is the women and girls who suffer the most because they are responsible for getting the water, water that often causes death and disease. When a well is drilled, girls go to school and we give women microfinance tools to start small businesses. It puts an end to the downward spiral of poverty,” said Gil Garcetti.

“One out of 7 children dies before their fifth birthday. When a well is drilled, child mortality is reduced by 70 per cent and lives are transformed for generations to come,” said Founder Barbara Goldberg.

Public Education Radio Campaign Shows Californians Working Together to Make Their Communities Healthier

How can Californians live healthier when their communities make it difficult to make healthier choices in their daily lives? According to a new radio campaign from CA4Health and aired by the California Broadcasters Association, the solution is to work together at the local level to make changes that will make it easier for people to make healthier choices when it comes to their diet, physical activity, where they live, and how they manage their health.

The two organizations recently launched a public education radio campaign suggesting several ways that Californians can make that happen. Each of the spots in the campaign, which will air in both English and Spanish, opens with the same question: “How can we make healthy choices, when those choices are out of reach?”

The radio spots focus on the goals and strategies of CA4Health, a project of the nonprofit Public Health Institute funded by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s (CDC) Community Transformation Grant program to work with local health departments and community partners to make California’s rural and less populous counties healthier places to live:

•  reducing consumption of sugary drinks by increasing access to healthier beverages including water,

•  increasing physical activity through Safe Routes to Schools programs and more walkable/bikeable communities,

•  reducing exposure to secondhand smoke by increasing access to smoke-free multi-unit housing,

•  strengthening linkages to clinical services by increasing access to Community Health Workers and workshops for individuals living with high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol to help them better manage their chronic conditions.

“People living in rural and more remote parts of our state face unique challenges in terms of access to resources and information that can improve their health,” said Robert Berger, Program Director for CA4Health. “Our new partnership with the California Broadcasters Association and its member stations will play a critical role in using the power of local radio to inform and inspire community involvement and action.”

The issues highlighted in the education campaign are among the most important facing our state.

•  Approximately nine million Californians live in apartments and other multi-unit housing, and studies show that being subjected to drifting secondhand tobacco smoke is a significant health hazard. The CDC estimates that exposure to secondhand smoke increases heart disease and lung cancer risk for adults by 20-30% and causes more severe and frequent asthma attacks for children.

•  Sugary drinks are the leading source of added sugar in the American diet, a leading cause of the diabetes and obesity epidemics.

•  The number of California students that walk or bike to school has declined by nearly half over the past forty years, depriving millions of children of a healthy source of daily physical activity.

“We are happy to help spread the word about how communities can become healthier places to live and work,” said Stan Statham, President and CEO of the California Broadcasters Association. “Our member stations serving these rural markets play a vital role in informing and educating their listeners and are embracing this opportunity to make a healthy difference in people’s lives.” Since the campaign began in January, more than 55 member stations have aired the English and Spanish language spots.

Foster Care Associates recognises young carer

Foster Care Associates has recognised the efforts of a young carer from the Vale of Glamorgan for the difference he makes to the lives of the children and young people his family fosters.

FCA.jpg (164×88)After being nominated by his mum, Rachel, and his dad, Mark, Jamie, 12, won ‘Young Carer of the Year’ at the annual Foster Care Associates (FCA) Achievement Awards. The family has been fostering with FCA Cymru for three years.

Rachel explained that she had nominated Jamie because of the way he has wholeheartedly accepted the work they do, giving up his free time to support them in caring for the children they look after.

Rachel said: “I’m so proud of Jamie. I think his experience of fostering has made him a very independent, mature and selfless young man. My daughter, Charlie who’s 16, is also incredibly patient with the children we look after.”

Jamie has taken fostering in his stride and explains how looking after vulnerable children is a family affair.

Jamie said: “Mum hadn’t told me she’d nominated me, so I was really surprised to win the award and it felt good to be chosen.

“I’m happy to help mum and dad whenever they need it. When a foster child joins our family I try and make sure they feel welcome, as they are sometimes shy at first.”

It is essential for anyone thinking about fostering as a career to be able to communicate with children and make them feel at home, due to the fact that many looked after children have had a tough start in life and need the support that a caring family can provide. Fostering is a normal part of life for many birth children, requiring the whole family to work together to look after the children who stay with them.

Birth children are the unsung heroes of fostering, and are often integral to maintaining stability within the foster family. They act as a role model and friend to the vulnerable youngsters who stay with them, ensuring the children settle in quickly and feel welcome in the family home. Recognising that fostering affects the whole family, FCA Cymru ensures that birth children are involved in every activity and have their voices heard.

Jamie wasn’t the only one to receive an award, many other young people received recognition for their hard work at the ceremony held by FCA Cymru.

He won the award because he is always happy to help care for the little ones, never complains when he has to share his parents’ attention and has given up his free time to help paint and decorate rooms for youngsters in care.

npower Joins Children In Need Fundraising Effort

As Children in Need returns to screens on Friday 16th November, staff at the npower call centre in Burton are gearing up for a busy night.

More than 160 npower employees have volunteered their time to man 96 dedicated phone lines, taking donations throughout the entire live BBC broadcast. This is the second year the team at Burton has been selected as the BBC’s regional call centre for the West Midlands, having taken more than 5,250 calls and £175,000 in donations in 2011.

After last year’s success, npower is doubling the number of dedicated lines and staff will be taking donations from 6.30pm on Friday until 2.00am Saturday.

Last year, more than £9 million was taken in donations by the 55 regional call centres across the UK, which saw Children in Need raise a staggering £26 million on the night.

Paul Walker, contact centre manager for npower in Burton, commented: “We are thrilled to be representing Children in Need again this year, and we have many new and returning volunteers keen to be involved. Many of our volunteers will be finishing a normal working day before hitting the phone lines.

“To get everyone in the fundraising mood and keep them going through the night we will be donning fancy dress, with the theme being ‘back to school’, as well as various other activities and games to raise money. A number of local food outlets have also donated food to keep our volunteers energised through the evening.

“We’ve decided to increase the number of phone lines on the night to ensure that those wishing to contribute to this year’s grand total have an opportunity to do so, and we’re expecting a very busy night.”

The npower team has been building up to the big event on Friday with a range of fundraising activities including dress down days, raffles and quizzes. npower has also pledged to add £5,000 to any money raised by the Burton team for Children in Need.

Paul Walker added: “The response from staff has been amazing, and it’s great that we have this opportunity to use our resources and expertise to support the cause in the best way we can.”

Children in Need is dedicated to making a difference to the lives of children across all of the UK. Its vision is that every child in the UK has a childhood which is safe, secure and happy and allows them the chance to reach their potential. The charity also provides grants for projects which focus on children and young people.

This year’s live show promises to be bigger and better than ever and every penny raised or donated through call centres like npower’s will go towards helping disadvantaged children in the UK.

Warriors for Chief! “For the Love of a Horse” is collaborating with Georgia Equine Advocates of North Georgia to raise funds for lifesaving surgery for “Chief” a 13 year old Appaloosa rescue horse who has a severe condition called “Osteoarthritis” in his right front pastern. Chief struggles to walk and is essentially three-legged lame. Because of his chronic pain, without the surgery, Chief would have to be euthanized.

In this down economy, it is indeed a huge undertaking for anyone, much less little non-profit organizations such as us to raise the estimated $10,000 for Chief’s surgery, isn’t it? All that money for a horse, you say? Well, who is to say that Chief isn’t as deserving as any other horse in need of our help? This is the mission of “For the Love of a Horse” …our way of giving back to the horses who, have throughout history and now given us so much in return. It is because of their beauty, their grace and their loyalty that we champion for them when no one else will.

“For the Love of a Horse” is a non-profit, 501(c) 3, tax exempt organization comprised of volunteers. Foster Care Associates supports local charities

Foster Care Associates (FCA) has boosted funds for local charities after raising over one thousand pounds at a summer fun day.

The leading Isle of Wight fostering agency donated almost £600 at the end of August to both the Barely Born Appeal at St Mary’s hospital in Newport and Face 2 Face, a befriending service for parents with disabled children, delivered by Scope. The welcome donation was raised as a result of cake sales, raffles and a variety of games held at a family fun day for the agency’s many foster families and looked after children.

FCA provides support for foster carers and looked after children in many ways, one of which is through organising events and activities for its foster carers, their families and the young people in their care. These include football tournaments and local fund raising events which raise much-needed funds to support deserving causes such as the Barely Born Appeal and Face 2 Face service which strive to improve the lives of vulnerable children and families.

Events are organised not only for the purpose of raising money but also bringing foster carers and looked after children together for fun social activities, encouraging them to get involved with others in the community.

Diane Le Moignan, regional manager for FCA South, commented: “FCA is committed to supporting local charities and projects that make a real difference to families within the community, so I’m thrilled to pass on the generous donation made by FCA staff and foster carers.

“The on-going fundraising by carers and the FCA team demonstrates how passionate they are about the work they do to support vulnerable children and families. FCA foster carers come from all walks of life but they are all enthusiastic, patient and compassionate people.”

The Barely Born fund supports families with babies in the intensive care unit of St Mary’s neonatal ward.

Annie Hunter, Head of Midwifery at the hospital, said: “We are delighted that Barely Born was chosen by Foster Care Associates and we are hoping to use the donation on updating a garden area adjacent to the unit for all the families who use our services.”

Scope is a national charity supporting disabled children and adults, and their families.

FCA is continually looking to recruit more carers that can make a difference to the lives of vulnerable youngsters in care. Foster carers come from all backgrounds, but the qualities they share above all are patience, resilience and a positive outlook.

Rural Retreat Depot Foundation Secures Long Term Lease

The Rural Retreat Depot, made famous by O. Winston Link in his 1957 photographs entitled “Birmingham Special Gets the High Ball at Rural Retreat” and “The Pelican at Rural Retreat, VA”, sits on land belonging to the Town of Rural Retreat, VA. The Rural Retreat Depot Foundation is raising money to purchase and restore the depot building, and now it has firm ground to stand on.

“Signing this lease for the depot land was critical to our efforts to not only raise money for the building purchase, but also to procure grants for the renovation” said Charles Miller, President of the Depot Foundation; “The Foundation greatly appreciates this valuable contribution by the Town, and we hope it will encourage donations towards our building fund”.

The Town of Rural Retreat grew up around this Virginia Tennessee Railroad Depot in the 1850’s, effectively relocating a village that had formed a few miles away along the Great Road of Virginia. The original depot was burned during the Civil War, and was replaced by the present structure in 1866. The depot operated as a Norfolk and Western passenger station and Railway Express Office for many years but was closed by Norfolk Southern when it ceased passenger operations. The depot building was sold to a private party but the land under the depot was donated to the Town by the Norfolk Southern Railroad. The Depot Foundation now has agreement for the land and hopes to raise the necessary funds to buy the building by October of this year.

The citizens of Rural Retreat, Wythe County and others from around the country have formed the Rural Retreat Depot Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to saving and restoring the depot. “The Town of Rural Retreat is delighted to have the Foundation working on behalf of the depot. The depot is the centerpiece of Rural Retreat and we look forward to its restoration,” said Tim Litz, Mayor of Rural Retreat. The restoration plans will focus on history, learning and community activities.

“R.I.P., G.O.P” Says Republican Anti-Romney Activist

Will the GOP survive Mitt Romney? No chance, insists a Republican precinct committee officer (PCO) from Redmond, Wash., who has renounced the ticket on two of his websites, RIPGOP and RINORomney.

Lord Nigel Featherston, a former Microsoft engineer who holds 12 patents, thinks the Grand Old Party can be saved, but not by the Romney-Ryan ticket.

“Electing Romney would drive another nail into the party’s coffin,” Featherston declares on his website. Although he rants against RINOs (Republicans In Name Only) and labels Romney a “liberal RINO who lacks any basic conservative principles,” the 66-year-old entrepreneur isn’t suggesting conservatives cast votes for Democrats.

“We must vote for conservative congressional candidates and we must fight the destructive RINOs by rejecting Romney,” he urges, adding, “Vote or write-in a true conservative, perhaps the Libertarian candidate.”

Regardless of the outcome of November’s election, Featherston believes a new conservative party must be created. RINOS killed the GOP, he says.

As for Romney’s pick of Paul Ryan as his running mate, Featherston says voters must realize this is “a total sham.” If Romney were a true conservative he would not have the support of Karl Rove and the GOP country club RINOs, Featherston contends. The notion that Ryan’s conservatism will make Romney more conservative is ludicrous, he insists. “Romney only pretends to be conservative in hopes of getting elected.” After the election, Featherston predicts Ryan will regret being Romney’s running mate,” realizing he was chosen just to provide conservative lip-service and to appease conservatives and the Tea Party. Although Featherston has donated to Republican candidates in the past and served multiple terms as a GOP PCO, he now leans toward the Libertarian party.

Charity Educating the Children Benefits from Support of Leading Web Agency Alchemy Viral

Children in the Masai Mara region of Kenya will now be helped further following the announcement that one of the UK’s leading Web Search Optimisation agencies is backing charity Educating the Children. Alchemy Viral has this week announced its support for the leading international children’s charity.

Educating the Children works to raise awareness of the issues affecting children throughout the Masai Mara region, including things like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and enforced childhood marriages for young girls.
