Foster Care Associates recognises young carer

Foster Care Associates has recognised the efforts of a young carer from the Vale of Glamorgan for the difference he makes to the lives of the children and young people his family fosters.

FCA.jpg (164×88)After being nominated by his mum, Rachel, and his dad, Mark, Jamie, 12, won ‘Young Carer of the Year’ at the annual Foster Care Associates (FCA) Achievement Awards. The family has been fostering with FCA Cymru for three years.

Rachel explained that she had nominated Jamie because of the way he has wholeheartedly accepted the work they do, giving up his free time to support them in caring for the children they look after.

Rachel said: “I’m so proud of Jamie. I think his experience of fostering has made him a very independent, mature and selfless young man. My daughter, Charlie who’s 16, is also incredibly patient with the children we look after.”

Jamie has taken fostering in his stride and explains how looking after vulnerable children is a family affair.

Jamie said: “Mum hadn’t told me she’d nominated me, so I was really surprised to win the award and it felt good to be chosen.

“I’m happy to help mum and dad whenever they need it. When a foster child joins our family I try and make sure they feel welcome, as they are sometimes shy at first.”

It is essential for anyone thinking about fostering as a career to be able to communicate with children and make them feel at home, due to the fact that many looked after children have had a tough start in life and need the support that a caring family can provide. Fostering is a normal part of life for many birth children, requiring the whole family to work together to look after the children who stay with them.

Birth children are the unsung heroes of fostering, and are often integral to maintaining stability within the foster family. They act as a role model and friend to the vulnerable youngsters who stay with them, ensuring the children settle in quickly and feel welcome in the family home. Recognising that fostering affects the whole family, FCA Cymru ensures that birth children are involved in every activity and have their voices heard.

Jamie wasn’t the only one to receive an award, many other young people received recognition for their hard work at the ceremony held by FCA Cymru.

Victor Thomas, regional manager for FCA Cymru commented: “Jamie is an outstanding young man with a positive attitude and a mature head on his shoulders. He won the award because he is always happy to help care for the little ones, never complains when he has to share his parents’ attention and has given up his free time to help paint and decorate rooms for youngsters in care.

“Congratulations Jamie, you’ve done us all proud and you really deserved the recognition.”

npower Joins Children In Need Fundraising Effort

As Children in Need returns to screens on Friday 16th November, staff at the npower call centre in Burton are gearing up for a busy night.

More than 160 npower employees have volunteered their time to man 96 dedicated phone lines, taking donations throughout the entire live BBC broadcast. This is the second year the team at Burton has been selected as the BBC’s regional call centre for the West Midlands, having taken more than 5,250 calls and £175,000 in donations in 2011.

After last year’s success, npower is doubling the number of dedicated lines and staff will be taking donations from 6.30pm on Friday until 2.00am Saturday.

Last year, more than £9 million was taken in donations by the 55 regional call centres across the UK, which saw Children in Need raise a staggering £26 million on the night.

Paul Walker, contact centre manager for npower in Burton, commented: “We are thrilled to be representing Children in Need again this year, and we have many new and returning volunteers keen to be involved. Many of our volunteers will be finishing a normal working day before hitting the phone lines.

“To get everyone in the fundraising mood and keep them going through the night we will be donning fancy dress, with the theme being ‘back to school’, as well as various other activities and games to raise money. A number of local food outlets have also donated food to keep our volunteers energised through the evening.

“We’ve decided to increase the number of phone lines on the night to ensure that those wishing to contribute to this year’s grand total have an opportunity to do so, and we’re expecting a very busy night.”

The npower team has been building up to the big event on Friday with a range of fundraising activities including dress down days, raffles and quizzes. npower has also pledged to add £5,000 to any money raised by the Burton team for Children in Need.

Paul Walker added: “The response from staff has been amazing, and it’s great that we have this opportunity to use our resources and expertise to support the cause in the best way we can.”

Children in Need is dedicated to making a difference to the lives of children across all of the UK. Its vision is that every child in the UK has a childhood which is safe, secure and happy and allows them the chance to reach their potential. The charity also provides grants for projects which focus on children and young people.

This year’s live show promises to be bigger and better than ever and every penny raised or donated through call centres like npower’s will go towards helping disadvantaged children in the UK.

Be a Warrior for Chief

Warriors for Chief! “For the Love of a Horse” is collaborating with Georgia Equine Advocates of North Georgia to raise funds for lifesaving surgery for “Chief” a 13 year old Appaloosa rescue horse who has a severe condition called “Osteoarthritis” in his right front pastern. Chief struggles to walk and is essentially three-legged lame. Because of his chronic pain, without the surgery, Chief would have to be euthanized.

Can you say CRAZY?

In this down economy, it is indeed a huge undertaking for anyone, much less little non-profit organizations such as us to raise the estimated $10,000 for Chief’s surgery, isn’t it? All that money for a horse, you say? Well, who is to say that Chief isn’t as deserving as any other horse in need of our help? This is the mission of “For the Love of a Horse” …our way of giving back to the horses who, have throughout history and now given us so much in return. It is because of their beauty, their grace and their loyalty that we champion for them when no one else will.

“For the Love of a Horse” is a non-profit, 501(c) 3, tax exempt organization comprised of volunteers. We are dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of equines, specifically those with critical-care medical needs who would otherwise be euthanized. Our mission is to provide these equines with a second chance at life and companionship. We also educate the public, through our “Community Outreach Program”, on respect for all animal life and the importance of compassion, commitment and responsibility. Foster Care Associates supports local charities

Foster Care Associates (FCA) has boosted funds for local charities after raising over one thousand pounds at a summer fun day.

The leading Isle of Wight fostering agency donated almost £600 at the end of August to both the Barely Born Appeal at St Mary’s hospital in Newport and Face 2 Face, a befriending service for parents with disabled children, delivered by Scope. The welcome donation was raised as a result of cake sales, raffles and a variety of games held at a family fun day for the agency’s many foster families and looked after children.

FCA provides support for foster carers and looked after children in many ways, one of which is through organising events and activities for its foster carers, their families and the young people in their care. These include football tournaments and local fund raising events which raise much-needed funds to support deserving causes such as the Barely Born Appeal and Face 2 Face service which strive to improve the lives of vulnerable children and families.

Events are organised not only for the purpose of raising money but also bringing foster carers and looked after children together for fun social activities, encouraging them to get involved with others in the community.

Diane Le Moignan, regional manager for FCA South, commented: “FCA is committed to supporting local charities and projects that make a real difference to families within the community, so I’m thrilled to pass on the generous donation made by FCA staff and foster carers.

“The on-going fundraising by carers and the FCA team demonstrates how passionate they are about the work they do to support vulnerable children and families. FCA foster carers come from all walks of life but they are all enthusiastic, patient and compassionate people.”

The Barely Born fund supports families with babies in the intensive care unit of St Mary’s neonatal ward.

Annie Hunter, Head of Midwifery at the hospital, said: “We are delighted that Barely Born was chosen by Foster Care Associates and we are hoping to use the donation on updating a garden area adjacent to the unit for all the families who use our services.”

Scope is a national charity supporting disabled children and adults, and their families.

FCA is continually looking to recruit more carers that can make a difference to the lives of vulnerable youngsters in care. Foster carers come from all backgrounds, but the qualities they share above all are patience, resilience and a positive outlook.

National Trust Heritage Gardens Benefit From Major New Plant Conservation Centre

Rare plants from National Trust gardens across the country will be propagated at a new Plant Conservation Centre that will improve the way one of the most important plant collections in the UK is cared for.

Opened by international plantsman Roy Lancaster, the new 2.5 acre facility at a secret East Devon location will bring together plant propagation facilities, plant collection management expertise and facilities for training National Trust staff on all aspects of caring for the important plants in the gardens they look after.

The opening of the new facilities comes at a time when the spread of new plant diseases in the UK, in particular ‘Phytophthora ramorum’ which causes Sudden Oak Death, have required an acceleration of emergency propagation to ensure the survival of threatened specimens and the supply of disease-free replacements.

The £700,000 Centre’s immediate focus will be to build on existing plant conservation work at Knightshayes Court, also in Devon, to help staff and volunteers record and identify the special plants that require priority propagation at National Trust gardens throughout the country.

Mike Calnan, Head of Gardens at the National Trust, said: “The National Trust’s portfolio of plants is of immense importance and is one of the most significant collections in the UK.

“The aesthetic, historic and botanical value of the plants is what makes the gardens we look after so special and give pleasure to more than 12 million visitors each year.

“This is the most important plant conservation initiative from the National Trust for more than 60 years and will have a legacy for decades to come.”

The charity cares for over 20 major collections of trees and shrubs including thirty National Plant Collections and hundreds of plants that were first raised or collected in the wild around the globe and planted in National Trust gardens over past centuries.

Roy Lancaster said: “The new Plant Conservation Centre is a hugely important development for the National Trust, creating for the first time a single facility dedicated to the vital work of conserving the important plants in its properties.”

In addition to the Centre’s work for the National Trust, a new bespoke propagation service for major private plant collection owners will be offered for the first time.

Propagation services are also available to Trust countryside properties wishing to save or bulk-up rare native species.

The National Trust gardeners who will be working at the Centre recently propagated and helped save over 300 old Cornish apple varieties now successfully established in the ‘Mother orchard’ at Cotehele in Cornwall.

Charlie Port, who worked for the National Trust at Knightshayes and is now one of the volunteers that will be working at the new Centre, said: “Working in the propagation unit is extremely rewarding.

“I’ve been involved with propagating plants for the Trust for 25 years now and during that time we’ve had thousands of successes.

“I get huge satisfaction from the idea that some of the plants I have handled will be around for hundreds of years to come.”

The brief is to develop an overarching brand strategy that helps deliver the Trust’s core charitable purpose – looking after special places for ever, for everyone – whilst broadening the charity’s appeal.

The Trust has performed well through the economic downturn, seeing record visitor numbers of 19 million in 2011 and reaching four million members last autumn, but the charity knows the brand can extend its relevance and appeal to more people.

18 Feet & Rising will be at the forefront of evolving perceptions of the Trust, opening up conversations with new and existing audiences and facilitating experiences between people and the places that are special to them.

Clare Mullin, Director of Brand & Marketing at National Trust, said: “We are delighted to be working with 18 Feet & Rising as our lead creative agency.

“They clearly understand our strategic priorities and have shown that they can help make the Trust relevant today through their strategy and creative.

The Co-operative Approach Raises Ethical Bar Yet Again

As the United Nations celebrates the International Year of Co-operatives, the UK’s biggest mutually owned business yesterday (16 February) demonstrated how its longer term approach has enabled it to raise the ethical bar yet again.

The Co-operative Group’s latest ethical plan, first launched 12 months ago as the most radical sustainability programme in UK corporate history, shows how many of the original targets, particularly in relation to environmental issues, have been achieved well ahead of schedule.

The new plan shows that in the past 12 months The Co-operative has seen:
• Operational greenhouse gas emissions reduce by a massive 35%, and water consumption is down by 20%
• Lending of £700 million has been progressed to green energy projects
• Pressure groups have ranked The Co-operative as leader in areas such as pesticides, palm oil, sustainable fish and forest stewardship
• A million new customer members have joined
• Support for a new community initiative in the UK every hour of every day
• 700 co-operative enterprises have been helped to grow and prosper
• 70% of developing world products that can be Fairtrade will be Fairtrade by end March

This year’s Plan contains 53 commitments and, in order to ensure that The Co-operative continues to be the UK’s most socially responsible business, includes the following:
• Operational greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 50% by 2020, and water consumption will be reduced by 30% by 2014
• £17m will be invested in support of co-operative development
• The number of schools active in our Green schools Revolution will be doubled to 6,000
• To improve the safety of Britain’s roads, young drivers will be rewarded with premium discounts worth £20m
• A new campaign will be launched with Oxfam to champion small-holder farmers and co-operatives, and the role they can play in feeding the world sustainably
• 30,000 loans to entrepreneurs in the developing world will be facilitated by the year end Group Chief Executive Peter Marks said: “Despite the economic downturn we have remained true to our pledge to show the way on corporate responsibility.

“The one million new members we now have bears testimony to the continued support we have had from our customers. It also helps that the savings that result from our environmental efficiency initiatives, nearly £40m a year, are being ploughed back into the business to reduce costs.

“Our work in the communities in and around our stores is going from strength to strength. Amazingly, the average person in the UK is now only a mile away from a community project that has received our support.

“Abroad, we have continued to lead the way on tackling global poverty. Our new partnership with Oxfam is particularly timely given it’s the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives. Smallholder farmers and co-operatives already help feed a third of the world, with a little more help they can help us rise to the challenge of how to feed sustainably the extra two billion that will be on the planet by 2050.”

Jonathon Porritt , Founder Director of Forum for the Future, said: “The UK’s energy economy has been profoundly weakened by an over-dependence on the big energy companies and inconsistencies in both policy and regulation.

“Despite all that, community energy schemes are at last coming into their own, and the very substantial support now promised to community energy by The Co-operative has the potential to transform this hugely exciting sector. If you want to see what the ‘green economy’ looks like in practice, look no further.”

Oxfam Chief Executive, Barbara Stocking said: “Oxfam and The Co-operative’s new campaigning partnership will shine a spotlight on the crucial role that small farmers and co-operatives play in global food production. It’s morally indefensible that 1 billion people currently go hungry every day; increased international investment in co-operatives and small farmers, especially women, who produce the majority of the world’s food, would help to tackle this injustice and ensure a future where everyone always has enough to eat.”

1,127 Buddhism Tudongha Monks in Thailand

These eye-opening pictures have been happening for 12 consecutive days in Thailand. The starting date was on Jan 2, 2012 and it has been going on until today, Jan 13.  It will continue on until Jan 25, 2012 which is the last day of this special activity. Normally, Tudongha in Buddhism involves the discipline of detaching from materials as they are in order to free the mind from defilements.

Although the monks are walking from province to province instead of walking in the forest, they still have to practice their mind. This is the first time in history of Buddhism that 1,127 Theravada monks are doing Tudongha in unison for the distance of 365 km.  It will take them 24 days to walk on the path strewn with rose petals and with local people waiting along the path saying “Sadhu” to express their joy in seeing the monks doing this Tudongha on the entire route. What inspires a large number of people to carry out this activity continuously for a long time in strong heat of the afternoon sun?  These people never give up their intention even though they have to wait on the rugged roads and lack various means of comfort. They never neglect their participation even for a short time.

This is because of the peaceful temperament of the monks who have practiced their mind very well.  This enables the Buddhists to touch the real core of Buddhism by watching the monks doing their Tudongha. The monks and the people intend to walk the various routes that cover 6 provinces in order to pay homage to the 6 significant places that their Great Master used to stay.

As of today, the 1,127 Tudongha monks have walked through 2 places which are in Song Pi-Nong District, Suphanburi Province. These places are: 1. Phra Mongkolthepmuni Memorial which is the place where The Great Master was born, and 2. Song Pi-Nong Temple where The Great Master ordained.Today, all 1,127 Tudongha monks are coming to the third important place which is Boadbon Temple, Bangkuvieng, Nonthaburi Province where The Great Master attained Dhammakaya.

The monks have walked 150 km. already and they have to walk the remaining of 215 km. in 12 more days and that will be the end of this Tudongha.  We can say that this had never happened before in history.  What will happen next?  Let us continue in the next episode. Rebuilding the Amazon Rainforest One Tree at a Time

What is Amazing Forest

Yes, the Amazon rainforest is being cut down as you read this. 17% is already gone. The world’s lungs – as it’s referred to – is decreasing in size. Yes, everyone knows this. But what can we really do about it? The Amazing Forest is a chance to do something right from where you are, sitting in your chair, a few clicks and USD 60 away.

Amazing Forest is the venue where people from all over the world are combining their efforts into one single strain to restore the Amazon rainforest to its original state.

We sell trees. Not trees to be delivered to your door, but to be planted on your behalf, in your name, in a designated specific area of the Amazon rainforest. The trees being planted are new trees. So, instead of preserving already existing areas of the rainforest, the Amazing Forest is actually reversing deforestation. We take so much from Earth everyday; this is a way to give something back to it.

It’s a common saying that, to eternalise your passage in this life, one must have children, write a book and plant a tree. Well, the four tree species that are currently being planted in the Amazing Forest (they are native species typical of the region: jatoba, copaiba, ipe rosa and louro freijo) live in average 200 years.

And what’s cool about it, people get their own tree, which will never be cut down and remain throughout its life individualised by a name tag, with the name they choose for it.

“We want to give people the opportunity to make a difference for the environment while leaving their own positive footprint in the planet”, says Rodrigo Nascimbeni, the founding partner of the company, “a footprint so tangible and concrete that people can come and see it, show to their children, to their great-grand-children, to their friends…” he goes on referring to the fact that customers can visit their tagged trees in situ while walking inside the real Amazon rainforest.

Amazing Forest goes much beyond simply selling trees online, it is each person’s way to contribute to a better world and to guarantee that future generations will share the same bliss to live here on our planet.

And, better yet, this noble act of planting a tree and committing to a better world can be renewed as often as wanted. Each tree is sold for USD 60.

Besides doing your share of good for a better planet, people can buy trees either as a present for a loved one, a memorial, a way to mark an important occasion or as a simple and convenient method of offsetting their carbon emissions.

Amazing Forest launched on Monday the 23rd of May 2011. The first piece of land to be replanted is situated approximately 34 miles outside the city of Boa Vista, Roraima State in North Brazil (if you go to Google Maps, we’re right where the green arrow points to at these coordinates 2 29 44.40 N 60 56 40.85 W).

Newport Ashley Named UK Volunteer Of The Year 2010

Ashley Pyke, aged 17 from Newport, has been named The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteer of the Year 2010. The announcement was made at a special youth conference being held by The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteers programme as part of National Volunteers Week.

The awards, now in their second year, recognise the outstanding work being carried out by young people involved in The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteers initiative. The programme, which operates throughout Wales and England, was established by The Co-operative and youth sports development charity StreetGames, to help young people from disadvantaged areas gain sports coaching and community leadership skills by volunteering at their local neighbourhood sports project.

The 7 finalists from England & Wales shortlisted for the awards were judged on factors including skills and qualifications gained, general attitude, impact on other young people and their community, as well as their personal journey and achievements.

Ashley, aged 17, volunteers at the Newport Positive Futures project which delivers sport to young people throughout Newport.

Despite having a turbulent family history and arriving in Duffryn without knowing anyone, Ashley has become an integral figure in the community. As well as leading sports session for local young people, Ashley has also mentored other volunteers experiencing troubles, is involved with attracting funding to the project and has pushed himself to gain qualifications which have meant that the project has been able to extend the activities it offers. He has also gone on to use his new found skills and confidence to gain employment with a local ‘Soccer Tots’ programme for under six year olds.

Daryl Gardener (Baylor University and 1996 first round pick of the Miami Dolphins) is a special partner of The Amos House of Faith and has invited other members of the NFL Players Association to join him in supporting this cause while enjoying a day of golf, networking, great food, fun and prizes.

The Amos House of Faith, a non-profit organization, provides support for survivors of burn trauma. The organization needs community involvement to make 2010 the year of a groundbreaking ceremony for a House of Hope for burn survivors and their families. Founder and Executive Director, Justina Page knows just how arduous the road to recovery can be.

On March 7, 1999 the Page family (Justina, her husband and six sons) experienced the horror of a house fire. The fire claimed the life of the Page’s 22-month old twin son, Amos, and severely injured Justina and the other twin. She knows firsthand the depth of support necessary to heal the physical and emotional trauma and transform a burn patient from a victim to a survivor. Chem-Dry’s Employees Headed Out Into Their Local Community To Give A Helping Hand

Employees at the Head Office Beverley-based carpet and upholstery and disaster restoration specialists Chem-Dry swapped their desks and computer keyboards for paint rollers and shovels as they headed out into their local community to give a helping hand.

The group spent the day re-painting playground games and potting planters at Cavendish Primary School, while others got stuck in with a spot of painting at charity funded drug-support organisation Compass UK in Hull, as part of the business’ Corporate Responsibility programme.

With the generous support of local organisations such as Coletta and Tyson, coupled with donations from family and friends, the group were self-sufficient, enabling them to source all the tools for the jobs themselves.

Nicola Whitham, Assistant Head Teacher at Cavendish Primary, said:

“We are so grateful that Chem-Dry took the time to help prepare planters and paint our playground markers. We don’t receive funds for such work so we really appreciate their kind generosity. Since Chem-Dry’s visit, we have planted bulbs in time for Spring, with the help of parents and family, and have made good use of the ground markers to teach the children road safety and other useful life skills.”

npower Staff Offer Stoneferry Primary A Helping Hand

Eight volunteers from npower’s Hull offices on Clough Road were given the opportunity to offer a helping hand to Stoneferry Primary School this week. The staff took time out of their working day to help tackle a gardening project with the head teacher in order to improve the school environment for the pupils and teachers to enjoy.

On arrival at the school, donned in npower t-shirts, the volunteers were first introduced to the whole school in morning assembly. It was here that they had the opportunity to explain to the children where they had come from, their purpose for visiting the school and the aims of the task. After this, the npower staff fully immersed themselves in the project, stopping only for lunch with the children.

The volunteers sowed plants, laid bark chippings, installed a bird feeder and cut back overgrown shrubbery. At the end of the afternoon an area of the playground had been rejuvenated into a bright, vibrant place for children to play in and hopefully attract some wildlife to the area.

Head Teacher Jo Harrison was delighted with the team’s efforts, commenting: “Our school is surrounded by industry and the initiative provided a great opportunity for a local company close to Stoneferry Primary school to become involved in community work. We are very grateful to npower and the staff who all volunteered – giving their time and money in making a big difference to our school environment.”

Leading the npower volunteering team, Lisa Thompson added: “The team had a fantastic day undertaking their volunteering task and worked really hard in getting the playground more accessible for the children. The challenge was to bring more greenery to the area with various plants and a bird box to attract wildlife. The playground is now a safer environment and we feel this project was a great chance to make a positive contribution to the local school children.”

Several Member of the NWSA are assisting on the fires in Southern California and many others stand ready to help if needed

As Southern Californian’s battle to save lives, homes, and its landscape several Member Companies of the National Wildfire Suppression Association have been dispatched to aid in the firefighting efforts with the raging infernos.

Our goal is to compliment the efforts of the agencies to help put these fires out. Grayback Forestry has sent one fire engine and a 20 person crew on out of their Northern California location.

Firestorm Wildland Fire Suppression Inc. of Chico, California has sent out two 20 person crews to the staging area in San Bernadino to be assigned to fire duty.

All Terrain Corp/ATWC Fire Support of Ukiah, CA has 3 tactical tenders at the Witch fire and a THERMO GEL mixing plant for helicopter support stationed at Fallbrook, CA.

Diamond Fire has a 20 person crew on the Santiago Fire.

Northwest Timber Fallers has taken an order for a Timber Faller team.

NWSA Member Companies are Professional Wildland Fire Contractors that provide a variety of services to the agencies throughout the United States to aid in firefighting and emergency response situation. Many of them were called up to help with the shuttle recovery as well as Hurricane Katrina. These services are provided through contracts/agreements with the agencies. There are 130 twenty person contract crews available for dispatch through the PNW Interagency Crew Agreement. In addition there are 400+ fire engines and tenders available from many different regions in the U.S. by NWSA Members.

Some of those resources include 20 person hand crews, fire engines, water tenders, dozers, hand washing units, and timber faller modules. Many of our members have been in this business for over 20 years, and are a wealth of knowledge in fire suppression.

NWSA members are highly trained and qualified individuals that include the school teacher, the college student, and your neighbor next door, they are the men and women of America that are working hard to ensure that our environment escapes as much damage as possible from the ravages of fire.

NWSA membership is over 200 strong and includes includes members from twelve different states.

“We are glad to help our neighbors in the battle of their life against the enemy Fire. That is what our members are trained and ready to do.” “Our goal is the same as any other cooperator helping on the fires to help protect, lives, homes and the environment from the flames of fire.” Says Debbie Miley, the Executive Director for the National Wildfire Suppression Association.
