National Trust’s Director-General to step down

The National Trust has announced that Fiona Reynolds has decided to leave the charity after more than 11 years as Director-General.

Fiona is to take up her duties as Master of Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge, in the autumn of 2013 – the first woman to be elected Master in the College’s history.

She said: “As a graduate of Cambridge I am thrilled to be going back to head one of its finest colleges.

“I have loved every minute leading the National Trust and working with our passionate and dedicated staff, volunteers and supporters.

“I am incredibly proud of all that we have achieved in the last 11 years.

“There is no organisation like it and I will miss it terribly. But it is time to allow someone else an opportunity to make their mark.”

Fiona has overseen a period of transformational change at the National Trust, reconnecting the organisation with its original founding purpose, and infusing it with warmth and liveliness.

Membership hit four million last year from 2.7 million in 2001, and visitor numbers to the Trust’s 300 properties reached 19 million from 10 million a decade ago. Volunteer numbers have also doubled, with 62,000 people involved last year.

From her earliest days at the Trust Fiona pioneered an ‘arms open’ approach to conservation, bringing expert work out from behind closed doors to take place in front of visitors, now an integral part of the Trust’s programme to bring places to life.

Property acquisitions have included the vast Victorian Gothic Tyntesfield and its estate near Bristol, Vanbrugh’s Seaton Delaval Hall in Northumberland, the ‘back-to-back’ terraced houses in Birmingham, John Lennon’s boyhood home in Liverpool and the quirky home of Kenyan-born poet Khadambi Asalache in Wandsworth.

These acquisitions have been part of a concerted focus on social and community relevance for the Trust, recently underlined by the long-term lease taken out on Tredegar House in South East Wales.

As a geographer and walker with a passionate interest in landscape, she has systematically added to the 617,000 acres of countryside under the Trust’s care.

During this time she has championed the importance of access to the outdoors and nature for people’s wellbeing and promoted local and seasonal food with a drive to create 1,000 new allotments on National Trust land.

Most recently, this included the acquisition of the 617-acre Llyndy Isaf estate near Snowdon after a public appeal raised £1 million in seven months from 20,000 donors.

She has overseen a restructure of the governance of the charity, from a 52-member Council to a 12-member Board of Trustees, as well as two major internal restructures which have strengthened and localised the organisation.

While maintaining the Trust’s strict party-political neutrality, Fiona has championed its conservation principles, most recently leading the charge against proposed changes to the planning framework which, she warned, would bias planning towards excessive building in the countryside.

Fiona, 53, will continue in her post at the National Trust until her successor is in place. She plans to use the interval between leaving and moving to Cambridge in September 2013 to write a book about her years at the Trust.

Newport Ashley Named UK Volunteer Of The Year 2010

Ashley Pyke, aged 17 from Newport, has been named The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteer of the Year 2010. The announcement was made at a special youth conference being held by The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteers programme as part of National Volunteers Week.

The awards, now in their second year, recognise the outstanding work being carried out by young people involved in The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteers initiative. The programme, which operates throughout Wales and England, was established by The Co-operative and youth sports development charity StreetGames, to help young people from disadvantaged areas gain sports coaching and community leadership skills by volunteering at their local neighbourhood sports project.

The 7 finalists from England & Wales shortlisted for the awards were judged on factors including skills and qualifications gained, general attitude, impact on other young people and their community, as well as their personal journey and achievements.

Ashley, aged 17, volunteers at the Newport Positive Futures project which delivers sport to young people throughout Newport.

Despite having a turbulent family history and arriving in Duffryn without knowing anyone, Ashley has become an integral figure in the community. As well as leading sports session for local young people, Ashley has also mentored other volunteers experiencing troubles, is involved with attracting funding to the project and has pushed himself to gain qualifications which have meant that the project has been able to extend the activities it offers. He has also gone on to use his new found skills and confidence to gain employment with a local ‘Soccer Tots’ programme for under six year olds.

Century Models And Talent Agency Has Recently Conducted A Charity Fashion Show To Benefit The Cancer Society

Century Models and Talent Agency has recently conducted a Charity Fashion Show to benefit the Cancer Society, IN COLLABORATION with a local designer, Jonathan Price. They made sure all the name brand models they represent should be on the ramp for a probable cause.

Century Models and Talent Agency always believes in giving something to the community in some way or the other. Last year they had there models clean cars on King Street, and all the money collected was given to the United Way. Century Models and Talent Talent Agency would like to convey to there competitors to start helping out in some form or the other. We wish them luck and thank the models for there time and hard work.

npower Staff Offer Stoneferry Primary A Helping Hand

Eight volunteers from npower’s Hull offices on Clough Road were given the opportunity to offer a helping hand to Stoneferry Primary School this week. The staff took time out of their working day to help tackle a gardening project with the head teacher in order to improve the school environment for the pupils and teachers to enjoy.

On arrival at the school, donned in npower t-shirts, the volunteers were first introduced to the whole school in morning assembly. It was here that they had the opportunity to explain to the children where they had come from, their purpose for visiting the school and the aims of the task. After this, the npower staff fully immersed themselves in the project, stopping only for lunch with the children.

The volunteers sowed plants, laid bark chippings, installed a bird feeder and cut back overgrown shrubbery. At the end of the afternoon an area of the playground had been rejuvenated into a bright, vibrant place for children to play in and hopefully attract some wildlife to the area.

Head Teacher Jo Harrison was delighted with the team’s efforts, commenting: “Our school is surrounded by industry and the initiative provided a great opportunity for a local company close to Stoneferry Primary school to become involved in community work. We are very grateful to npower and the staff who all volunteered – giving their time and money in making a big difference to our school environment.”

Leading the npower volunteering team, Lisa Thompson added: “The team had a fantastic day undertaking their volunteering task and worked really hard in getting the playground more accessible for the children. The challenge was to bring more greenery to the area with various plants and a bird box to attract wildlife. The playground is now a safer environment and we feel this project was a great chance to make a positive contribution to the local school children.”

Several Member of the NWSA are assisting on the fires in Southern California and many others stand ready to help if needed

As Southern Californian’s battle to save lives, homes, and its landscape several Member Companies of the National Wildfire Suppression Association have been dispatched to aid in the firefighting efforts with the raging infernos.

Our goal is to compliment the efforts of the agencies to help put these fires out. Grayback Forestry has sent one fire engine and a 20 person crew on out of their Northern California location.

Firestorm Wildland Fire Suppression Inc. of Chico, California has sent out two 20 person crews to the staging area in San Bernadino to be assigned to fire duty.

All Terrain Corp/ATWC Fire Support of Ukiah, CA has 3 tactical tenders at the Witch fire and a THERMO GEL mixing plant for helicopter support stationed at Fallbrook, CA.

Diamond Fire has a 20 person crew on the Santiago Fire.

Northwest Timber Fallers has taken an order for a Timber Faller team.

NWSA Member Companies are Professional Wildland Fire Contractors that provide a variety of services to the agencies throughout the United States to aid in firefighting and emergency response situation. Many of them were called up to help with the shuttle recovery as well as Hurricane Katrina. These services are provided through contracts/agreements with the agencies. There are 130 twenty person contract crews available for dispatch through the PNW Interagency Crew Agreement. In addition there are 400+ fire engines and tenders available from many different regions in the U.S. by NWSA Members.

Some of those resources include 20 person hand crews, fire engines, water tenders, dozers, hand washing units, and timber faller modules. Many of our members have been in this business for over 20 years, and are a wealth of knowledge in fire suppression.

NWSA members are highly trained and qualified individuals that include the school teacher, the college student, and your neighbor next door, they are the men and women of America that are working hard to ensure that our environment escapes as much damage as possible from the ravages of fire.

NWSA membership is over 200 strong and includes includes members from twelve different states.

“We are glad to help our neighbors in the battle of their life against the enemy Fire. That is what our members are trained and ready to do.” “Our goal is the same as any other cooperator helping on the fires to help protect, lives, homes and the environment from the flames of fire.” Says Debbie Miley, the Executive Director for the National Wildfire Suppression Association.

The members of the NWSA throughout the U.S. stand ready to provide additional resources as needed.

After only 3 months since the loss of their son, the Tiegers have raised over $10k for stillbirth awareness and research

Imagine you or someone in your family went to the hospital expecting to deliver a baby, just to find out that the baby was dead.

Stillbirth devastates 83 families everyday in this country. Nearly 1 in 100 births will result in stillbirth. There are more stillbirths every year than all causes of infant death combined – including SIDS. It is for thesereasons and many more that Jeff and Lori Tieger of Staten Island, NY created Daniel’s STAR (The Daniel Ian Tieger Fund for STillbirth Awareness and Research). The organization is named for their son Daniel Ian Tieger, who was born still on February 8, 2007 just 7 days shy of his due date.

Daniel’s STAR raises money for the MISS Foundation, a national volunteer based non-profit organization committed to providing crisis support and long term aid to families after the death of a child from any cause. All of the money raised will fund MISS programs for research and public education of stillbirth. MISS boasts a 7% administrative cost so 93 cents of every dollar will actually go to its intended location.

Daniel’s STAR is hosting their first annual Shining STAR Golf Classic Monday July 30, 2007 at LaTourette Golf Course in Staten Island, NY. Registration is now open and spots are filling fast. For only $150, players will enjoy lunch before tee off, various challenges throughout the event, and a BBQ Awards Dinner to present prizes to the challenge winners. In addition to the golf classic, Daniel’s STAR will be host the first annual Memorial Walk in the Park tentatively scheduled for early October. “We just want to spread the word and give this issue the long overdue attention it deserves”, said Lori Tieger.

In the 3 months since they lost their son, the Tiegers have been responsible for raising over $10,000 for stillbirth research and awareness. “Just as any parent would do anything within their power for their child, this is all we could do for ours”, Jeff Tieger said. In addition to fund raising, the Tiegers have been back and forth to Albany meeting with legislators and lobbying for the MISSing Angels Bill. This bill provides a Certificate of Birth Resulting in Stillbirth. Currently New York and most other states do not provide any recognition of the existence of stillborn babies, or the birth process that they and their mothers endured. Along with the other parents at the meetings, the Tiegers were responsible for the first movement of the bill since it was introduced into the New York State Government in 2003.
